Hapoel extended tonight (Sunday) its winning streak across all competitions to nine, impressing against Hapoel Be’er Sheva with 104:68 at the Conch. For the first time this season, they passed the 100-point barrier. Like their opponent, the cup holder, they suffered an inaccurate start with quite a few missed shots and turnovers - but recovered first and took control of the game quickly, cruising to an easy win that kept them at the top of the table with a 7:1 record in the Winner League. On Wednesday, Jonathan Alon's squad will head for a tough away game in the EuroCup against undefeated Valencia, and in the next Winner League round, they will host Hapoel Galil Elyon next Saturday night.
Hapoel showed a particularly balanced distribution of minutes and points, with all 11 available roster players scoring and six of them scoring in double digits - all while none of them played more than 24 minutes. Jared Harper again led the scorers, shooting only three times from the field and hitting only one three-pointer - but was sent repeatedly to the line, maintaining perfect percentages with 11/11 from the line. Or Cornelius scored 13 points including 3/5 from beyond the arc, Khadeen Carrington and Derek Ogbeide each contributed 12 - with the big man also finishing 6/7 on twos including some especially monstrous dunks and grabbing three steals - while Chris Johnson recorded 11 points of his own, including three-for-three from three-point range, and Gabi Chachashvili led his teammates with six rebounds alongside his ten points. Noam Dovrat, who was one point shy of double digits, handed out six of the visitors' 22 assists - while Tarik Philip recorded a lackluster performance in his renewed Winner League debut with four points on 1/6 shooting from the field and 2/6 from the line, but added four steals out of the team’s total 13. The reds from the capital were scattered with 18 turnovers - 4.4 more than their season average before this round - but compensated with 13 three-pointers at an impressive 56.5%, alongside a nice 61.1% on twos.
The hosts cannot take much from the debut of their new-old coach Rami Hadar, in a game where they failed to be competitive in most stages and lost by 36 points in the end - also registering their season worst with 24 turnovers. Ron Tsiper was almost the only one on their side to deliver a good performance with 16 points, including three threes at 50%, Iverson Molinar was less dominant than usual with 13 points on only 4/10 shooting - while he did dish out four assists but also lost the ball the same number of times - and Paul Scruggs closed the list of only three players scoring in double digits with 12 points alongside three steals, finishing 0/4 from three. Ray Spalding and Spencer Weiss led their teammates in rebounds with 11 and 9 boards respectively, but the big man also lost five turnovers - the same amount as Neta Sagal - while the naturalized player finished 0/6 from beyond the arc. The entire team hit only four threes out of 23 attempts (17.4%), shot 48.7% on twos, and left nine points on the free throw line (18/27) - distributing only 13 assists for baskets for a nearly 2:1 negative assist-to-turnover ratio. The team from the Negev capital, now standing at 4:2 in the Winner League, hopes to recover already next Saturday night - when they host Ironi Nes Ziona in the ninth round.
