Just like in last Wednesday’s EuroCup win, the State Cup holders once again proved the depth of their roster this evening (Saturday night), arriving in Gan Ner with a depleted frontcourt – but making up for it with a particularly talented backcourt. Yonatan Alon’s squad faced a determined opponent that managed to turn a double-digit deficit into a two-point lead in the final quarter, but then Jared Harper – the Reds’ standout player since the start of the season – came alive, scoring 15 of his 23 points in the final ten minutes to lead his team to an 89-81 victory. This Wednesday, Hapoel returns to European action, hosting Venezia in Bulgaria, before traveling to face Hapoel Haifa next Sunday in their upcoming domestic league game.
Despite missing Austin Wiley, Justin Smith, and the injured Nimrod Levi, Hapoel’s short rotation featured just eight players – but nearly all of them contributed at least six points. Noam Dovrat started the game red-hot with three perfect three-pointers and reached double figures in the first quarter. Jeremy Morgan also had a great shooting night from deep, hitting 4-of-5, and together they accounted for more than half of the team’s 13 three-pointers at an excellent 43.3%. Gabi Chachashvili stepped up in the paint, compensating for the missing frontcourt players with a dominant performance and leading the team with six rebounds, despite the Reds grabbing only seven offensive boards compared to the hosts’ 16. However, Hapoel had a significant edge from the free-throw line – getting there 38 times, 18 more than their opponents, with Harper alone taking 12 shots and missing only two as the team finished with nearly 80% efficiency.
