Tonight it begins: Hapoel's journey to defend the State Cup title - which it has held for two consecutive seasons - gets underway as the team visits Hapoel Be’er Sheva at the Kirya Arena in Ashdod at 18:50, due to the unavailability of the local Conch arena. The game will be broadcast live on Sport5.

The cup has brought Hapoel and Be’er Sheva together three times over the past seven seasons. In both previous meetings - the 2017/18 quarterfinals and last season’s semifinal - Hapoel came out victorious, going on to lift the trophy last year. The last quarterfinal meeting between the two, on New Year’s Eve 2017, ended with a dominant 79-62 win for Hapoel, led by Jerome Dyson and Ronald Roberts. Be’er Sheva's Storm Warren scored 23 points that night and later played two games for Hapoel during last season’s intense period.

Last year’s semifinal was much tighter, with Be’er Sheva erasing a 13-point deficit before Hapoel secured a 74-69 win thanks to 16 points from Khadeen Carrington and a clutch three by Yovel Zoosman.

The game will be played at Ashdod’s Kirya Arena, where Hapoel has played about 12 times historically, winning seven of them - the last one on December 1, 2019. Interestingly, Hapoel’s only other game on that same date came this season - against none other than Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

Though visits to Ashdod have been rare, one particular incident stands out: before a league match in late November 2018, Hapoel players noticed loose screws in the rim during warmups. The hoop eventually bent and was deemed unfit for play. After an hour of failed repairs and rejected creative solutions (like hanging rims), the game was postponed. When Hapoel returned a month later, Josh Owens dominated with 17 points in the paint in a crushing 87-64 win.

Tonight, Hapoel returns to Ashdod, hoping to continue its path toward defending the cup title
