Hapoel “Bank Yahav” Jerusalem fell 82-80 to Hamburg Towers in Germany tonight (Tuesday) in Round 12 of the EuroCup, marking their third consecutive loss in the competition. The Reds, already hit hard by injuries with Noam Dovrat and Yuval Zosman sidelined, saw Or Cornelius suffer a pelvic injury in the third quarter. Later, Gabi Chachashvili (fifth foul, third quarter), Tarik Phillip (unsportsmanlike foul in the fourth after an earlier technical), Chris Johnson, and Jeremy Morgan (both fouled out at the end) were also benched, leaving the team with only four players on the court in the final 2.5 seconds. Despite the challenges and trailing most of the game, Hapoel fought hard and even took a slight lead late on a Johnson three-pointer, but Hamburg closed strong with key offensive rebounds to secure the win.

Fatigue showed in Hapoel’s poor outside shooting (29.2%, 7/24), with Khadeen Carrington missing all seven of his attempts beyond the arc and finishing with 11 points. Jared Harper led the team with 26 points (4/9 three-pointers), 5 assists, while Tarik Phillip contributed 13 points on 4/5 two-pointers. Derrick Ogbeide was a strong presence inside with a double-double of 10 points and 14 rebounds. For Hamburg, Jysak Lotti led with 18 points and 6 assists, Kor Kwath recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Niklas Wimberg added 12 points (5/5 inside) including a crucial late rebound that decided the game.

Following the loss, Hapoel dropped to 5-7 in the EuroCup and finds itself in a tight battle for second place in Group B. Their next chance to end the losing streak will be in two weeks, after the Christmas break, when they “host” Aris Thessaloniki in Samokov.

Game Summary:

Hapoel Starting Five: Jared Harper, Khadeen Carrington, Or Cornelius, Chris Johnson, Gabi Chachashvili
Hamburg Starting Five: Bray Avey, Niklas Wimberg, Jonathan Stub, Kent Ovah, Kor Kwath

Hamburg started strong with a quick 6-0 run, led by Kwath and Avey scoring inside. Carrington got Hapoel on the board from the line, and Chachashvili added a basket inside. Kwath continued dominating the paint, pushing Hamburg to a 10-4 lead. Harper answered with a three-pointer, and Jeremy Morgan tied it at 15-15. Ogbeide and Morgan then led a 7-2 run giving Hapoel a 21-19 lead after the first quarter. Lotti led Hamburg on a 6-0 run to open the second quarter, making it 28-22. Hapoel struggled offensively, with Carrington missing easy shots, but Harper hit a three and Johnson followed with one to cut the gap to 33-29. Hamburg kept a small lead, but Harper’s buzzer-beater three tied the game 43-43 at halftime.

Carrington scored first after the break, but Avey responded with a three to reclaim the lead. The teams traded leads until Cornelius left with an injury. Stub and Lotti pushed Hamburg ahead 56-52 near the quarter’s end. Harper tried to close the gap from the line, but Hamburg ended the quarter leading 62-60. They extended the lead to 66-60 with baskets by Kwath and Barnett. With a shortened rotation due to injuries and fouls, Hapoel battled back—Phillip cut the lead to 68-66 before committing an unsportsmanlike foul. Harper responded with a big three to tie at 76-76. Hamburg regained the lead, but Johnson’s corner three put Hapoel ahead 80-78. Morgan added a free throw to make it 80-78. Lotti answered with a basket-plus-foul to put Hamburg back up, and despite Harper’s missed three and missed free throws by Kwath, Hamburg grabbed an offensive rebound. Morgan fouled out trying to get the ball with three seconds left, leaving Hapoel with only four players on the floor. Wimberg made one free throw to seal an 82-80 victory for Hamburg.
