Light, love, and peace. On Hersh Goldberg-Polin.

The love for the red symbol and the pure belief in coexistence. Hersh was a person of love

The story of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, may he rest in peace, touched every Jerusalemite and sports fan deeply. It was a story that should have ended differently. He survived 11 months in captivity, wounded, almost freed - only to be murdered in cold blood. A child of love who went out to celebrate life (and his birthday) and was kidnapped. Hersh arrived in Israel at the age of 7, wrapped in an Israeli flag. He quickly fell in love with the red emblem and felt a true sense of belonging to the red community. As a loving and innocent child who stood cheering in the stands, he gazed with bright eyes and genuine admiration at the "Brigade" supporters' organization. Over the years, Hersh became part of the organization and took an active role in its activities. He organized fundraising events for needy families, painted signs, and always stood in the front row of the stands, closest to the fence, waving the flag. His love for the team and the community, which embraced him with open arms, was evident.

As his friends from the fan organization mourned him, they said, “Hersh, our beloved, our friend, our brother. Not long ago, we were writing songs for our team together. It’s unbelievable that today we’re writing a eulogy for you. We knew that Hersh was synonymous with light, love, and peace. We fell in love with you as a young child in the stands of Teddy and Malha. We grew up with you, traveled to games across the country and abroad. You were always there in the front row, close to the fence, next to the drum with the Hapoel Jerusalem flag in your hand.”

Always with the flag, closest to the fence

Hersh played a central role in communicating with fans of the German club Werder Bremen, who fought for his return throughout the 330 days he was held captive. With banners, protests, and even a flag hung outside the football stadium, the German fans never forgot their friend and screamed and demanded Hersh's return at every opportunity.

A special bond existed between Hersh and the German fans

Thousands came yesterday to accompany Hersh, who was a symbol of Jerusalemite spirit, coexistence, and spreading goodness on his final journey. All the players and staff attended to pay their last respects and ask for forgiveness with a special shirt.

Thousands accompany Hersh on his final journey

Hersh, whose smile and love for the emblem could not be missed, will no longer stand in the stands with a red flag and love for the team in his heart. The entire Hapoel Jerusalem community lowers its head and asks forgiveness from our beloved Hersh. Forever in our hearts.

Hapo-Hersh, my life is just a mistake
Without any meaning
When Hersh is not by my side

Hapo-Hersh, you caused me pain
You broke my heart
I love Hersh.
