In August 2009 Hapoel Jerusalem signed a sponsorship deal with Guma Aguiar, a Jewish-American businessman. The team signed six foreign players: forward Dijon Thompson, guard Chester "Tre" Simmons, forward Leo Lyons, center Brandon Hunter, center Kevinn Pinkney and point guard Eugene "Pooh" Jeter. The team also signed Israeli players Uri Kokia and Yogev Ohayon.


Hapoel opened the season winning the Winner Cup after defeating Maccabi Tel Aviv 86-80. Simmons was named the tournament MVP.

During the season, Hapoel lost almost half of its home games. A huge win on the road over Maccabi Haifa in the last game of the regular season gave Hapoel the second place in the league. Jeter was named Sixth Man of the Year.

Hapoel defeated Maccabi Rishon Lezion in the quarterfinals 3-1 and qualified for the Final Four. In the semifinals the team met Hapoel Gilboa/Galil. Gilboa/Galil won the game 79-69, and eventually won the championship.

Hapoel won the third place game and qualified for the Eurocup. After the game, coach Goodes announced his resignation.

In the State Cup Round of 16, Hapoel met Barak Netanya. Netanya won the game 77-76, eliminating Hapoel from the tournament after the first game.


Hapoel participated in the Eurocup, and was drawn in the qualifying round against Roanne from France. Hapoel won the two games between the teams and qualified for the group stage. The team was drawn in Group C and finished second in the group. In the Top-16 Round, Hapoel was drawn in Group J with Valencia, Kazan and Galatasaray, and was consider the group's underdog. After winning Galatasaray in Turkey in the last game, Hapoel qualified for the next round.

Hapoel faced Alba Berlin in the quarterfinals. Hapoel won the first game in Malha 67-61, But Alba won the second game 72-59 and qualified for the Final Four.
